The main components of the OpenOffice.org suite are: Writer, Calc, Impress, Base, Draw, and Math. OpenOffice.org is an alternative to other office applications like MS Office, but is compatible with them. This means that existing files can be opened and used between applications. As it is an alternative 'office' program, the age appropriateness is dependant upon the activity required of the student by their teacher, and is therefore appropriate for all age groups.
To download OpenOffice.org it is recommended that you choose the latest ('stable') version and follow instructions from there.
It is likely that your download will be from a mirror site (offsite download service) that will be chosen for you. Choose your operating system and language. Save the file to disk rather than running from the server.
