Comic Life is an application, available for both Windows and Mac platforms, that allows you to create comics from your photos and images. It provides an array of page templates and themes for beginners, and offers richer customisation for the more experienced user, such as a choice of fonts, image manipulation, filters, and the ability to use a webcam or DV camera to take snaps and post them immediately into a comic strip. Comic Life supports .Mac, html, QuickTime, and JPEG exports, so you can share on your website or blog, or via email.

You can download versions of Comic Life for both Mac and Windows for a 30-day trial.

Teacher support material
  • US high school teacher Gene Yang writes that comics are motivating, visual, permanent, intermediary, and popular - and can be harnessed in practically any subject and at practically any grade level. His website, Factoring with Mr Yang, provides ideas for teaching and learning.
  • Teaching comics.org provides a wealth of material on comics in education, particularly at secondary level.
  • ReadWriteThink's The Comic Creator invites students to compose their own comic strips for a variety of contexts, such as prewriting, pre- and post-reading activities, and response to literature. The extensive activities are easily adapted to use with Comic Life.
  • A helpful Google document from which you can either get or add ideas for using Comic lIfe in the classroom.

Reviews

I have been enjoying getting to know this programme, as a relative novice, I found it easy to navigate, and use. Presentation looks good, and the more I play around with it the better the results. The templates are a good starting point. As an ECE practioner I find this a great tool. Had trouble getting it to work with my Vista machine, but when installed on XP laptop it works fine.
